Amsterdam 98 Gay Games

The Cruisers were the only UK basketball team.
7 players drove to Amsterdam in VW Combi and a car, staying in campsite. The atmosphere was incredible, with the town painted pink and yellow — the colours of the Gay Games flags that were everywhere. With thousands of gay sports men and women from around the globe, this was truly a week long party. Two of original players pulled out, one returning to Canada, and the other taking on the role of cheer leader. The team managed to ring in two new players, including an ex-National league player — 6ft Mandy. The competition was a bit of a shock as only two players had actually played a proper match before. The Cruisers won 3 out of 7 games and came 16th out of 35 — top half of the draw. (The positioning could have been higher if team members hadn’t started partying on day three thinking that it was a knock-out competition).
